Uptown Betty LLC was created in 2023 by artist Grace Darling Hockley as a home for whimsy, wild ideas, and small acts of beauty. In the midst of a long and storied career in contract management, procurement, and international trade, she brings a very particular set of skills to the art world resulting in two equally important recommendations for life and business:

Artist Bio
Grace Darling Hockley is an American artist whose practice treats color as a material to be discovered, tested, and transformed. A lifelong rockhound, she quests for pigments in all their forms and follows the question “What happens if…,” seeking the hidden structures, reactions, and stories inside raw matter. Her work spans watercolor, oil, alcohol ink, melted crayon, and microscopic media, forming a body of art that behaves like a series of field experiments. Through small‑format abstractions and process‑driven studies, Grace reveals color as an active force-shifting, fracturing, pooling, and recombining into new emotional terrains.
Artist Statement
Grace Darling Hockley explores color as a living system. Her work begins with material gathering and a question, then moves through a series of experiments—melting, dissolving, layering, magnifying—to observe how pigments behave across scales. Whether working in watercolor, oil, alcohol ink, melted crayon, or microscopic media, she treats each piece as a laboratory for transformation. Colors collide, separate, crystallize, and bloom, creating forms that echo natural processes. Her art invites viewers to experience color not as surface, but as matter in motion: a record of energy, reaction, and the quiet intelligence of materials.
The Cataloging System:
Why the Art Has No Titles
Viewers will notice that original paintings by the artist do not carry traditional titles. The artist intentionally omits titles so that viewers can experience the color completely uninfluenced by external thoughts or feelings—the emotional terrain belongs entirely to the observer. Only reproduction items, such as prints and mugs, receive titles for clarity within the shop.
Because Grace Darling Hockley’s creative process is a scientific exploration, each piece is treated as a localized field experiment. The work travels with her, and changing environments bring direct shifts to the materials and the experiment itself. To preserve the integrity of these studies, every single piece is cataloged with a precise data string on the reverse side:
The Date of Completion: The exact day the experiment concluded.
The Precise Location: A record of where the pigments settled—whether shifting between neighborhoods in Baltimore, working from Vashon Island in Washington, or traveling through the Scottish Highlands and Portugal.
The Sequence Number: The chronological order of that day's successful reactions (e.g., #1, #2, #3).
The Core Specifications: The artist's signature (Grace Darling Hockley) and the exact chemical mediums used (such as watercolor and alcohol ink on cardstock).
This turns the back of the artwork into a literal laboratory log, tracking a specific moment of energy, geography, and reaction.
A Note on Texture: Because the artistic process involves saturating cardstock with wet media during field experiments, the paper retains a slight, permanent organic wave even after being professionally flattened. This dimensional texture is a natural hallmark of original, un-sized process art. Strategic placement of magnets or framing/mounting is the usual practice.
